User-friendly and Customizable: Canto Review
I use Canto for managing images for marketing and website purposes. It's my favorite file management system due to its easy navigation, regardless of one's skill level. I can share files through email or a link, and make folders private for copyright reasons. I can choose the file size and dimensions when downloading. Although thumbnail loading can sometimes lag, the downloading speed is fast. I highly recommend Canto!

This year, I found myself in need of a better Digital Asset Management (DAM) system. My previous systems were costly, non-visual, and hard to navigate. However, with Canto, I can easily distribute assets to my international offices and customers. This tool has effectively solved my problems. I particularly love the image tagging feature and the ease of searching and finding images. The overall folder structure and visual representation of images make it user-friendly for my employees worldwide. I appreciate that I can add as many users as I want without incurring additional costs, which sets Canto apart from many other DAM systems. I mainly use Canto for images, but I wish documents were displayed more visually when uploaded. I switched to Canto for its simpler and more visual folder structure, and its straightforward tagging and organization features.

Canto has assisted me in creating a searchable archive spanning 4 years of imagery. One of its most valuable features is the ability to add release dates based on when our shows air or when a magazine is published. My experience with the Canto DAM has been incredibly positive. The team at Canto is amazing to work with, always providing answers and tips promptly. I look forward to using this system for years to come as an internal research and sharing tool, as well as a marketing tool for our external partners.

I consider Canto to be an excellent tool that has maintained alignment within our large team. It acts as a single source of truth for various assets and prevents access and server issues, especially with our team spread across the country. It's user-friendly and easy to implement, while continually improving structure and strategy. The branded portals enable our employees to self-serve, reducing the need for manual management of daily requests. However, the interface could be less clunky and could use a modern makeover. I would also like more style guides to customize for different needs and brands within our organization. We chose Canto because it fulfilled most, if not all, of our requirements. We switched to Canto as it was more affordable, user-friendly, and met our specific needs more efficiently.

Fair Software, Yet Seeking Improvement
Overall, my experience with Canto has been fairly good. However, I wish they would include the feature to manually geotag any photo with location information. If Canto doesn't improve and adapt more quickly, I might consider switching to a different provider in the coming years. I value having a single space for all our photos and the ability to share them with partners by inviting them to create an account on our platform. This is much simpler than having to communicate with multiple marketing managers every time they need something. However, our information changes frequently, so constantly having to reupload documents is time-consuming and tiring. I wish real-time edits were possible, similar to Nuclino. It's also frustrating that the content of documents can't be searched for. The Geotag feature is great, but it only works if you have your location preset into the camera's metadata - you can't add in locations later, which is extremely frustrating. This wouldn't be a difficult feature for Canto to add.

Finding the right Digital Asset Management (DAM) for our pictures wasn't easy. However, Canto was simple to set up and nearly self-explanatory for everyone. It won us over with its role and rights concept, good thumbnails, support for almost every datatype, and comprehensible metadata-management. The ability to set up portals has been beneficial in distributing our media to various target groups.

An Honest Take on Canto
We've had a good experience with Canto. The company appreciates user feedback and uses it to develop new features, some of which I've personally contributed to. Canto is well-designed and easy to use. Although everything could always be cheaper, Canto's pricing is competitive. We chose Canto over Dropbox because it had better features and made sharing assets easier both internally and externally.

Transforming Asset Management with Canto: A Gamechanger
Originally, my team and I used personal hard drives and shared network drives for our asset management and communicated with graphics vendors via email. However, we've now transitioned most of this to Canto. A week after launching Canto, HR needed photos of colleagues. Previously, this would have taken hours, but with AI Smart Tagging, we found hundreds of photos within minutes. The interface is intuitive and offers a good balance between a ready-to-use solution and customization options. Custom tags and multiple tagging methods were a priority for us. Some solutions offered more customization but required more oversight, which our small team couldn't handle. The ability to create portals and upload links has revolutionized our asset distribution and collection. We recently hosted a large community fundraiser and gave each photographer an upload link with quick tag options. We effortlessly tagged and uploaded thousands of images. However, the facial recognition feature is weak. They use AWS facial recognition tool, but I believe Google's tool would be more reliable. Currently, we choose not to use it.

Other users have also given positive feedback, as long as they can find what they're looking for. However, it's important to note that this product requires regular administration to function optimally. I chose Canto for its many features, including its design, customizability, customer service, large thumbnails, organizational structure, tagging feature, and external portal. It's crucial to have an organized person to maintain this Digital Asset Management (DAM) system for everyone in the company, ensuring the organizational structure makes sense. Ideally, one person should spearhead the overall design, tags, and organization. The software works well for High-Ed, but it's important to pay attention to the details, like expiring links to photos or albums. This can get tedious and redundant.

Pros: I find Canto simple to use and appreciate that it works in both a browser and a desktop app. The previews for Adobe native files are particularly helpful when searching for specific assets. Cons: I'm not a fan of the UI - it's not easy to quickly view and pull down assets without going into them. The UX could certainly use some improvements, but there are no major issues that hinder functionality. Overall: I find Canto to be a simple tool that effectively addresses DAM needs.

The platform's user-friendly interface makes it easy to host, organize, and share all of our digital assets, putting all team members at ease and increasing their use of the platform in their daily work. Canto divides its users into three levels: Admin, Collaborator, and User. The platform is highly customizable for Admin and Collaborator level users, meeting most of our DAM needs. However, I feel the User-level experience could be expanded further.

Right off the bat, I was greeted with a Cookie Acceptance dialogue box, which I found to be a testament to their commitment to transparency and user privacy. It's refreshing to see a company that takes data privacy seriously, even before I could explore their site or read their Privacy Policy.The dialogue box was so persistent that it even prevented me from scrolling through the policy, which I found to be a unique approach to ensuring user consent. It's clear that they want users to fully understand and agree to their terms before proceeding, which is commendable.While they didn't offer a way to set cookie preferences, I took it as a sign of their robust data tracking, usage, and protection policies. It's intriguing to think about how they might be using my data to enhance their services or even create new ones.I was eager to share my thoughts about this unique approach in their contact form, but it turns out, I needed to agree to the policy first. This just further emphasized their commitment to user consent and data privacy. I'm looking forward to seeing how they resolve this and will definitely update my review once they do.
