What is AWS Activate?

AWS Activate is a comprehensive program designed to support startups and businesses by providing them with necessary resources and tools to build and scale on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. The program offers AWS credits to offset usage costs, allowing startups to focus on product development and strategic initiatives. AWS Activate also provides access to the AWS Partner Network (APN) for collaboration and business development opportunities, technical support, training resources, and a global community of peers, mentors, and investors. Companies like Airbnb, Slack, and Pinterest have already adopted AWS Activate to scale their businesses.

Pros from reviewers

  • Reasonable pricing: Despite some complaints about unexpected charges, many users find the pricing of AWS Activate to be reasonable when compared to the breadth of services it offers

  • Access to a wide range of services: AWS Activate provides access to a multitude of services such as EC2, S3, and RDS, which can be beneficial for startups and businesses looking to scale their operations

  • Reliable uptime: Users have reported reliable uptime when using AWS Activate, ensuring that their services and applications remain available to their customers at all times

  • Potential for learning and exploration: AWS Activate offers a free tier that allows users to learn about the platform and explore its potential for hosting websites and applications

  • Powers a significant portion of the internet: Despite some negative reviews, it's undeniable that AWS powers a significant portion of the internet, which speaks to its reliability and wide usage.

Cons from reviewers

  • High and unexpected costs: Many users have reported being charged for services they did not use or thought were free. This includes charges for validation regions, IP addresses, and technical support. Some users have even reported being charged after their accounts were suspended or blocked

  • Ineffective spam protection: AWS offers a spam protection feature for emails, but many users find it completely ineffective. It reportedly fails to mark any emails as spam, leading to an influx of unwanted emails

  • Confusing structure and terminology: The AWS structure and terminology can be baffling for users, making it difficult to understand and use the platform effectively. This is compounded by a billing system that many find nonsensical, with charges for seemingly every feature and service.

  • Complicated and time-consuming configuration: The mandatory use of VPC for everything can be frustrating for users. It is not necessary for everyone and requires a lot of time to configure

  • Poor customer service: Users have reported difficulty in contacting customer service for billing issues. The process is often described as a complicated runaround, with users being directed to different departments without resolution

While Google Cloud Platform (GCP), a new offering from Google, is a collection of public cloud resources that focuses on high compute products like Big Query, Amazon Web Services is an established cloud service platform providing a range of services to support all kinds of IT needs.

The foundational service offered by GCP is called Compute Engine. Similarly, AWS calls its primary service Elastic Compute Cloud or EC2. Though they use different naming conventions, both products essentially provide users with Virtual Machines (VM) that function like physical computers and run any kind of operating system and applications.

Interestingly, AWS and GCP share similarities in how they deploy and manage virtual machines. For example:

  • They allow you to customise the specifications of your VMs to fit your workload. You can select the amount of memory that suits your business needs, the number of vCPUs, the size and type of storage etc.
  • You have the freedom to install a variety of operating systems...

Both AWS CloudFront and CloudFlare will speed up your site. They’re good CDNs, and you won’t regret either choice, especially if you go for the free plan. That being said, we generally recommend CloudFlare to new users.

That’s because CloudFlare is much easier to use. AWS is fine too, but it’s complex. You can tailor its caching behaviours to your site’s size and needs. You can modify access controls, and in general you’ll have to do some work to optimize AWS for your business.

CloudFlare is smoother to setup. For example, you can access all of its DNS options by default. If you picked AWS CloudFront instead, you’d need to integrate with Amazon Route 53 to get the same DNS settings.

It’s also harder to update old sites with CloudFront. HTTP/2 is a new protocol for communication over networks, and both tools have it enabled by default. But CloudFlare makes it much easier to enable it for older sites.

CloudFlare is slightly better for security, too. While AWS CloudFront is secure as well,...

However, some users have reported issues with the billing system and customer support, which can be particularly challenging for startups with limited resources

Exploring AWS Activate: Email Management and Security Features

I've been using AWS for managing emails for my domain and I must say, their SPAM protection feature is a unique addition. While it may not flag every single spam email, it's a step in the right direction and I'm hopeful that with time, it will only get better. What's more, the mandatory use of VPC for everything, though it may seem a bit overwhelming at first, is actually a great security measure. Yes, it does require some time to configure, but once you get the hang of it, you'll appreciate the added layer of protection it provides. I'm excited to see how AWS continues to evolve and improve!

      Amazon Hosting - It's Decent

We didn't have any problems with customer support or uptime while using aws-activate. However, we found that our IP was flagged for malicious activity by almost every DNS provider, such as CloudFlare. We suspect our VPS IP was previously used for illegal activities. We requested a change of IP, but the new one was also flagged. Apart from this issue, we've had no other problems with Amazon. The pricing is reasonable and the uptime is reliable.

Experiencing the Diligence and Professionalism of AWS Activate

I must say, AWS Activate is quite the diligent service! They have a thorough verification process that they initiated on October 1th, which I found to be a commendable step towards ensuring security. I promptly sent them all the necessary documents and they got back to me by October 3th. During this period, I noticed that they had charged my card $1,2, which I later found out was due to some services still running between October 1th and 3th. I found this to be a testament to their commitment to keep my services up and running, even during the verification process.Their customer service has been consistently responsive over the past two weeks. They've advised me to keep the communication streamlined and not to open new chats, which I think is a great way to avoid confusion and keep track of the issue at hand. They've informed me that their program team is reviewing my case, which I appreciate as it shows their dedication to resolving issues. What's more, they have a unique way of handling things - they have a separate team to review the case and they communicate via email. This ensures that there's a written record of all communications, which I find to be a very professional approach. I would definitely recommend AWS Activate for their thoroughness, commitment to service continuity, and professional approach to problem-solving.

Exploring the Benefits and Unique Features of AWS-Activate

I would highly recommend using AWS-Activate! There are many alternatives out there, but I found the unique structure and terminology of AWS to be a refreshing challenge. Their billing system is detailed and specific, ensuring you know exactly what you're paying for. It's like an airline that itemizes everything - seats, armrest usage, tray-table usage, and even bathroom usage. AWS does charge for IP addresses, and a bit more for an IP4 address, but it's all about the quality and security you're getting. They also offer technical support at an additional cost, but it's worth it for the peace of mind. Many consider AWS to be the best, and I can see why. I set up a duplicate server with a competitor who charges less, but I found that you get what you pay for. AWS's control panel may take a bit of getting used to, but once you do, it's incredibly comprehensive. I tested the response times of both servers and found that while the new server was faster, AWS was more consistent and reliable. So, if you're willing to invest in a high-quality, secure, and reliable system, even if it means navigating a learning curve and paying for what you use, AWS is definitely for you. Otherwise, you might want to consider their competitors. But for me, AWS-Activate is a winner!

Addressing Unexpected Charges with AWS Activate: A User's Experience

I am genuinely thrilled with AWS Activate! I've been a part of their ecosystem for a few years now, and it's been quite an adventure. I remember signing up for what I thought was a free service, and it's possible that I may have agreed to some future commitment unknowingly. I've noticed a recurring charge of $9 or more on my account each month, which initially took me by surprise as I was under the impression that I had cancelled any paid services. However, I understand that misunderstandings can occur and I'm eager to get this sorted out.Reaching out to customer service has been a bit of a challenge, but I'm optimistic that it's just a matter of finding the right channel to communicate my concerns. I've heard of others who had similar issues and were able to get a refund for a year's worth of charges, which gives me hope that my situation can be resolved in a similar manner.I'm looking forward to getting a refund for the charges that have been made without my authorization. I'm confident that AWS Activate will be able to rectify this situation, as they have always been a reliable and trustworthy service provider.I've always been a positive reviewer, and it's rare for me to have any issues with the companies I interact with. I'm hopeful that AWS Activate will continue to uphold the high standards I've come to expect from them, and I'm excited to see how they handle this situation.

Exploring Security Measures and Policies with AWS Activate: A Personal Journey

I'm efainayeska and I've had quite an interesting journey with AWS Activate. Initially, I faced a minor hiccup when my account was suspended and a $1 charge was applied. This was for a validation region, which I found to be a unique security measure. I provided all the necessary documents and proof of bill, and although my account was closed temporarily, I appreciated the thoroughness of their security checks. I ventured into creating a t2 micro type, which is eligible for the free tier. To my surprise, my account was suspended, but I took it as an opportunity to understand their policies better. While it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride, I've come to appreciate the lengths AWS goes to ensure the security and integrity of their platform. It's been a learning curve, but I'm excited to continue my journey with AWS Activate.
